Piazzolla and the Passion of Tango: A New World Symphony In-Context Festival

Fernando González
Advisor and Associate Producer
March/April, 2002

Piazzolla and the Passion of Tango: A New World Symphony In-Context Festival featured performances by the New World Symphony Orchestra; dance, including an evening of free tango lessons on Lincoln Road Mall, Miami Beach; a free all-Piazzolla chamber music concert; a free three-evening series exploring tango in film; and a first-ever exhibit of Piazzolla’s manuscript scores, personal items and his bandoneon, the button squeezebox that is the quintessential instrument of tango.

The festival culminated with “Piazzolla and the Orchestra”, a program including Piazzolla’s orchestral music, and works by his first teacher, Argentine master Alberto Ginastera, and Osvaldo Golijov, one of the best of today’s young Argentine composers.
