Tango and the restless heart
The music of Astor Piazzolla
It might seem quaint from afar, but whether Astor Piazzolla´s music is or is not tango remained, for decades, at the very center of a passionate debate among tango musicians and aficionados. It only waned towards the end of Piazzolla´s life, when worldwide recognition had made the point moot. Still, Piazzolla, who had unimpeachable tanguero credentials to boot, was fond of quoting Argentine novelist Ernesto Sábato, who said, “Piazzolla´s tango has the eyes, the nose and the mouth of its grandfather, the tango. The rest is Piazzolla.” |
